From kindergarten through third grade, kids are learning to read. But after third grade, they must read to learn. And when they fall behind, it’s nearly impossible to catch up. Research shows that kids who don’t read proficiently by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of school later on than their peers. Unfortunately, many students in San Antonio are already on this path.
Literacy kits can make a difference. The kits are a great way to get kids engaged in a particular book. Each kit includes a book selected for a certain age level along with related activities custom- crafted for one-on-one interaction between a child and an adult reader: volunteer, parent or caregiver.
The kits are designed to focus on the skills young children need when learning to read while, at the same time, diving deeper into the book and its themes.
Please join the Emerging Leaders Council (ELC) on Saturday, February 17th as we come together to build (create, color and construct) 175 Literacy Kits.
This volunteer opportunity is open to ELC members and guests aged 8 and older. If you are registering more than one volunteer (i.e. a group or family) please register as a TEAM.
If you are unable to join us, you can donate to this project. For the low cost of $5 per kit, you will make a difference in the lives of the one in five kids who can't read proficiently by the end of third grade—kids who are four times more likely to drop out of school. Your contribution will support a critical cause: improving literacy in our community. All proceeds will support United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County's Emerging Leader Council Literacy Kit program. Donate HERE.
