Volunteers are needed to serve as Ombudsmen for local nursing home and assisted living community residents. The goal of the ombudsman program is to ensure the best possible quality of life in Texas long-term care facilities. Ombudsmen also provide information about resident rights and help identify additional resources both in and out of the facility. While in the facility, the volunteer will talk with residents, family members, and guests to identify any complaints or problem. Then, the volunteer will work with those individuals and the staff to resolve these issues. Training is held virtually for 8 weeks, and the next session starts April 2025, at 5:30pm. Advocates provide confidential counseling and advocacy for elders age 60 and older and their caregivers. Advocates assist by providing information and assistance about available programs, applications for programs and help resolve claims with Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and/or pensions. advocates also assist in the areas of benefits and entitlements and assist seniors to understand and access public/private benefits. Join the group of advocates who will assist by giving services and information on the telephone, in person or at locations in the community. The Administrative Support Assistant will provide essential help to the staff of the Alamo Area Agency on Aging. Support includes but is not limited to answering telephone calls, taking messages or information, filing, assisting with survey data entry and mail-outs, assisting with assembly of a variety of packets and mailings, and assisting with creating newsletters. Additional support from the volunteer can be include data entry or computerized reports.

The Benefits Counseling program provides information, counseling and advocacy to senior citizens, and Medicare beneficiaries of any age, on their public benefits, entitlements, and legal rights. Benefits Counselors also provide public education on a variety of topics impacting seniors. Certified Benefits Counselors consult on topics such as: Medicare, Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, Advance Directives, Long-Term Care, Non-Covered Health, Other Insurance, veterans Issues, Social Security, Senior Fraud/Scams, and Medicare and Medicaid Appeals/Hearings.

Volunteers will come to the office and provide essential help to the staff. The assistance provided includes but is not limited to Data entry, filing, completing mail-outs, tracking surveys, making bulk copies,answering telephone calls and taking messages.
