A student’s reading level by the completion of 3rd grade is a known predictor of a student's academic performance and whether they will graduate on time. At United Way, we are working in increase the number of diverse reading programs for children that provide individualized learning, engaging topics and continuous monitoring to guide these young students to reading success.

Volunteer to be a Reading Buddy for students at Passmore and Cable Elementary schools through our impact partner Family Service Association.

Various volunteer shifts are open throughout the remainder of the school year.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to read to Pre-K – third grade students.

*Bilingual readers are needed for each grade level.

• First and third grade bilingual readers are needed the 3rd week of the month.
• Second grade has its own registration shift for bilingual readers.

Following the book, volunteers will ask the student questions to monitor the student’s reading comprehension.

All volunteers will need to have computer access to Zoom to participate in the program.

United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County will provide the direct link for login via calendar invite for the volunteer opportunity.
