United Way Day of Action is an enterprise-wide effort each year on June 21 to recognize volunteering as an essential part of our brand promise and engage individuals on our work in education, financial stability and health.
United Way is partnering with Kellogg’s® Eggo® waffles for United Against Food Deserts and Gardopia Gardens for this summer program.
Palo Alto College is located on the Southside of San Antonio, has the cities only horticulture program, has a childcare on-site, and is located in a food desert.
The Palo Alto Student Garden was started by the Horticulture Department for students to get hands on experience in gardening and farming. Each semester a class of students use the garden as an outdoor classroom; Fall is Small Farming, Spring is Organic Gardening and Farming.
Fresh produce from the garden will be used by students at Palo Alto, and for breakfast in the childcare program.
Community volunteers for United Way Day of Action will support the Palo Alto Garden with the following projects:
- Row Crop Optimization
- Produce Wash Station
- Build Picnic Tables
- Fence Completion
- Complete Raise Beds and plant summer crops
We will provide volunteers with the following:
- Free volunteer shirts
- Coupon for FREE Eggo waffles
- Breakfast will be provided
