Who We Are

Child Advocates San Antonio (CASA) recruits, develops, and leads volunteers to advocate on behalf of abused and neglected children in foster care. CASA is part of a nationwide organization of Court Appointed Special Advocates with 939 local chapters in 49 states, and 79,000 volunteers, helping 201,000 children annually find a safe and permanent home. Locally, CASA was established by the San Antonio chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women in 1984 and has been serving the children of Bexar County ever since.

Importantly, CASA works to fully support every volunteer Advocate with our in-house expertise, trauma-informed care approach, resources, and child-friendly space. More than 50% of our staff members have been with CASA for over 5 years, many have also worked elsewhere in the child welfare system, and many were themselves volunteer Advocates prior to their employment.

We understand what it takes to support a volunteer Advocate while they work closely with a child in foster care, the court and child welfare systems, schools, therapists, doctors, and families. And our thousands of volunteers over the years and the CASA Team agree: We were honored to be voted a Top Nonprofit to Volunteer/Work in the 2024 & 2025 Express News Readers’ Choice awards.

What We Do

CASA serves children in the child welfare system who have experienced abuse and neglect. Every year, thousands of Bexar County children are reported abused and neglected. Some children must be removed from their homes because it isn’t safe for them to stay there. Many of these children enter foster care, confused and scared, while a Judge determines where they can live that will be safe and permanent. Children often stay in foster care for a minimum of 12 months and in this time they can move from placement to placement between 4 to 16 times in a year. This is where a CASA Advocate can make an important difference by being a constant figure in a child’s life.
