Who We Are

The city of San Antonio strives to maintain the core principles of being a Compassionate City as set forth by the International Campaign for Compassionate Cities “Charter for Compassion” and the divisions within Department of Human Services (DHS) are dedicated to have those principles reflect through our work within the community. Within DHS, the Homeless Services division and our local homeless response system’s mission is to ensure that homelessness in San Antonio is rare, brief if experienced, and nonrecurring. DHS has many partnerships with nonprofits, government agencies, faith-based congregations, and community members who are dedicated to seeing this vision become a reality.

What We Do

The City of San Antonio supports the community’s efforts to end homelessness through participation on the South Alamo Regional Alliance to End Homelessness Continuum of Care; and support and coordination with our community based homeless services providers. There are many opportunities for volunteers to serve the community through the DHS Homeless Services division such as: provide and connect our homeless neighbors to resources, distribute hygiene kits, serving daily meals, organize and distribute clothing, participate in special events for the homeless and/or assisting staff during emergency weather conditions.
